This performance was recorded live at Passages, in the sanctuary of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. Passages is an ongoing event series presented by Great Circles, focused on the many variations of ambient music.

"At its core, we (Simon Martinez and Grant Bouvier) conceived the live performance at Passages as a conversation between extreme poles of atonality and harmony.

Simon and I have been friends and occasional collaborators for nearly a decade, and while our sonic vocabularies have many shared influences, we have developed very distinct aesthetics in that time. Our goal was to galvanize our unique styles into an episodic journey that stitched together elements of jazz, noise, ambient, and industrial to take listeners on a winding path, arcing through extreme dissonance and lush, atmospheric consonance in a single improvised work.

At times Simon and I inverted our typical musical positions, with Simon using the guitar in an extended range for noise and percussive sounds, and myself using synthesizers and effects to mimic the high melodies Simon’s guitar creates. We wanted to be distinct from each other, but able to disguise ourselves in moments to create engulfing and dense peaks throughout the work.

Ultimately, we wanted to be true to what we interpret Passages as. We wanted to create a performance that served as an expression of transformation and growth. Of light and dark. Past and future. Something that bridges the extremes of noise and tonality across time, to weave a story from elements that may seem foreign when experienced alone. To create cohesion from chaos in a way that could only be achieved through sonic collaboration of individuals with love for sound and love for all those sharing the singular moment of the performance."
